Wayne Lee Scott, a 51-year-old Black/African American male, tragically lost his life on the night of August 4, 2019, in Seattle, Washington. The fatal encounter unfolded outside Souvanny's Tavern, a bar in the Rainier Beach neighborhood that Scott was known to frequent. An ongoing dispute with another patron, identified as 38-year-old Derrick Holland of Renton, escalated into a violent confrontation that ultimately claimed Scott's life.
On that particular evening, a simmering animosity
between the two men boiled over. An argument and physical fight broke out between Holland and Wayne Scott, who was with his brother, Dwain. Reports from the incident indicate that Holland was seen with a handgun, which prompted the Scott brothers to confront him. A bouncer from the tavern intervened and managed to momentarily break up the fight. However, the conflict was far from resolved.
Shortly after the initial altercation, as the men stood outside the bar, the situation took a deadly turn. Holland allegedly pulled out his firearm and shot Wayne Scott. By the time police arrived at the scene, Scott was unresponsive and had no pulse. Holland fled the scene in a car with another unidentified man. In the aftermath of the shooting, the Seattle police launched an investigation that quickly led them to a suspect.
Derrick Holland was arrested over the following weekend and subsequently charged with second-degree murder in connection with Wayne Lee Scott's death. Court documents revealed that a comment made during the confrontation may have contributed to the escalating tensions. Bail for Holland was set at $3 million.
