In the late summer of 2021, the quiet community of Kennewick, Washington, was shaken by a tragic and violent series of events that culminated in the death of Vickie L. Kauf, a 68-year-old White/Caucasian woman. A respected and well-liked longtime educator in the Tri-Cities area, Kauf was found deceased in her East Kennewick home on August 26, 2021, alongside her husband, Dan Kaufman.
A family member, concerned after not hearing from the couple, discovered their bodies and alerted emergency services, stating that they had been "murdered."
Investigators believe that Vickie and Dan Kaufman were killed by their 43-year-old son, Ryan Kaufman. While a definitive timeline of their deaths has not been established, authorities have asked residents to review surveillance footage from the early morning hours of August 25th for any unusual activity. The deaths of Vickie and her husband were part of a wider, violent rampage allegedly carried out by their son. This destructive path also included the death of one of his neighbors and injury to another, as well as the setting of multiple fires, including at two union halls.
The tragic events came to a close on the morning of August 25, 2021, when Ryan Kaufman was involved in a police chase that ended in West Richland. During the pursuit, the pickup truck he was driving caught fire, and an exchange of gunfire with four officers ensued. Ryan Kaufman is believed to have died inside the burning vehicle. While investigators have linked the deaths of Vickie and Dan Kaufman to their son's actions, he was not officially named a suspect in their murders before his own death. The identification of his remains was initially pending due to the severity of the burns he sustained.
