In the quiet community of Deer Park, Washington, the life of 58-year-old Shannon Ayers came to a tragic end on January 18, 2022. That night, her husband, Dean Ayers, placed a call to 911 at 11 p.m. to report that his wife had shot herself in the head. When sheriff's deputies arrived at their home on North Perry Road, they found Shannon in the bedroom, still breathing but with a grievous gunshot wound. A 9mm semiautomatic pistol was in her right hand.
She was rushed to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries in the early hours of the following morning.
Initially, Dean Ayers told investigators that he and his wife had been arguing before she used the pistol he kept under his pillow to take her own life while he was in bed. However, inconsistencies in his account soon raised suspicions. In a subsequent interview, he claimed he was returning from the bathroom when he heard the shot. He also gave conflicting statements about whether he had moved the gun. Further investigation revealed that he had called his parents before ever dialing 911.
The physical evidence began to contradict the narrative of a self-inflicted wound. An autopsy revealed that the bullet had entered the left side of Shannon's head and exited the right. It was determined that the gun was fired from a distance of eight to twelve inches, a range that the medical examiner concluded would have been "extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible" for her to have inflicted upon herself, especially given that she was right-handed. Friends and family described the couple's relationship as "toxic" and stated that while they argued frequently and Shannon was planning to leave her husband, she was not suicidal.
Based on the conflicting stories and the forensic evidence, investigators concluded that Shannon Ayers had not died by suicide. Her death was ruled a homicide, and her husband, Dean Ayers, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. In October 2024, his trial commenced, where prosecutors laid out the case that Dean had shot his wife during an argument and then staged the scene to resemble a suicide. A jury later convicted him. In November 2024, a judge sentenced Dean Ayers, then 58, to 23 years in prison for the murder of his wife.
