On a summer evening in Lynnwood, Washington, the life of 16-year-old Jesus Sanchez Camunas Jr. of Bothell was cut tragically short. On July 14, 2022, shortly after 9 p.m., Sanchez Camunas Jr. was at Spruce Park with his 15-year-old friend, Tidus K. Linville-Goodwin. The two teenagers were confronted by individuals in a vehicle. Following a brief verbal exchange about gang affiliations, shots were fired from the back seat of the car. Both Sanchez Camunas Jr.
and Linville-Goodwin were struck by gunfire and fell to the ground as the vehicle, a distinctive 1996 Chevy Tahoe with a black front fender and hood and a white body, fled the scene. First responders arrived at the park, located at 16834 36th Ave W, and transported the two boys to a local hospital. Despite medical efforts, both teenagers succumbed to their injuries. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that the cause of death for both boys was gunshot wounds, and the manner of death was homicide.
The investigation into the double homicide led Lynnwood police to identify and impound the Chevrolet Tahoe believed to be connected to the shooting. For nearly a year, the case remained a priority for detectives. In June 2023, authorities announced the arrest of three suspects. Jose Alfredo Beteran, 29, Christian Jovany Chavez, 24, and a 16-year-old, Alexis Pacheco Monrroy, were charged with two counts of aggravated first-degree murder.
Prosecutors allege the shooting was gang-related. According to court documents, the three suspects drove to Spruce Park after hearing about "tagging" by a rival gang. It is believed that upon arriving at the park, one of the suspects questioned Sanchez Camunas Jr. and Linville-Goodwin about their gang affiliation. Witnesses reported that after Sanchez Camunas Jr. claimed affiliation with a rival gang, Chavez fired approximately 15 to 20 shots from the back seat of the Tahoe. Forensic evidence, including DNA, placed all three suspects inside the vehicle at the time of the shooting, with Beteran as the driver, the juvenile in the front passenger seat, and Chavez in the back seat where the shots were fired. Investigators believe the shooting may have been part of the juvenile suspect's initiation into the street gang. All three individuals had prior criminal records.
