On the evening of November 16, 2024, 9-year-old African American boy Antavious Scott, affectionately known as "TayTay," was fatally shot while playing football with friends outside the Southpoint Crossing apartment complex on West Lucy Street in Florida City, Florida. Around 9:30 p.m., two individuals dressed in dark clothing approached the area and opened fire toward the group, striking Antavious in the back. Emergency responders arrived promptly, and Antavious was airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, in collaboration with the Florida City Police Department, launched an intensive investigation. Surveillance footage revealed two suspects arriving in a white Volkswagen sedan, casing the area with a firearm, and fleeing the scene after the shooting. Cellphone data placed 19-year-old African American male Montreal Savontae Jackson Jr. at the scene during the time of the incident. The vehicle used was registered to one of Jackson's parents. Based on this evidence, Jackson was arrested on January 21, 2025, and charged with second-degree murder with a weapon. He is currently held without bond.
The arrest brought a measure of relief to Antavious's family. His mother, Shanika Williams, expressed that while the pain remains, knowing the suspect is in custody provides some closure. His grandmother, Teretha Williams, echoed this sentiment, stating she could finally rest. The family has since filed a negligent security lawsuit against the apartment complex owners, alleging inadequate safety measures contributed to the tragedy. They are advocating for improved security to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Antavious's death has deeply affected the community, prompting calls for increased safety and justice. Memorials and vigils have been held in his honor, reflecting the collective grief and determination to address gun violence.
