On March 12, 1911, H. M. Holloway, a White male Deputy Sheriff with the Pulaski County Sheriff's Department who also served as a detective for the Queen and Crescent Railroad, was killed in the line of duty in Stearns, Kentucky. The incident occurred during a period of significant labor unrest and violence known as the Queen and Crescent strike, which involved white railroad firemen protesting the employment of Black firemen on the Cincinnati Southern Railway.
