On the cool autumn night of October 16, 1979, a young White / Caucasian patrolman named Daniel Lee Hay was on duty, serving the community of Maysville, Kentucky. At 22 years old, the male officer had been with the Maysville Police Department for 18 months, embarking on a career he had dreamed of since he was a boy. That evening, a call came in reporting a burglary at a local grocery store, and Hay responded to the scene, unaware of the tragedy that was about to unfold.
While
investigating the break-in, Patrolman Hay was shot and killed. The assailant, identified as Gary Wayne Wilson, managed to escape the scene by fleeing through an air duct, leaving a profound sense of loss and shock in the small community. The young officer's sudden and violent death marked the first and only time a Maysville police officer was killed in the line of duty, a somber distinction that continues to hold. His dedication to his role was remembered by his colleagues, including his trainer, who recalled Hay's enthusiasm for his work and the deep camaraderie he shared with his fellow officers.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement launched a thorough investigation that led to the capture of Gary Wayne Wilson. The suspect was subsequently tried and convicted for the murder of Patrolman Hay. A court sentenced him to 40 years in prison for the crime. However, Wilson did not serve his full sentence. After 22 years of incarceration, he was granted parole in 2002. The early release of his son's killer was a source of pain for Hay's surviving family, including his parents, who remembered their son as a loving and dedicated young man who died doing the job he loved.
