In the early spring of 1983, a grim discovery was made in Jefferson County, Kentucky, that would unravel a series of connected tragedies. On March 12, the body of 39-year-old Nancy Bettman, a female, was found by a group of boys in a creek adjacent to a golf course. She was found partially nude and had been killed by a single gunshot to the back of her head. This discovery sent a chill through the community and prompted a thorough investigation by law enforcement.
As detectives delved into the case, they began to see a disturbing pattern emerge. Bettman's murder bore striking similarities to two other unsolved homicides in the area. Nearly two years earlier, on May 18, 1981, the body of 15-year-old Robin L. Barnes had been found in a marshy area in the southern part of the county. She had been shot three times and showed signs of sexual assault. Then, on March 25, 1982, 29-year-old Shannon House was discovered in a wooded area near a local park. She, too, had been shot and sexually assaulted. The investigation into the string of killings eventually led police to Beoria Abraham Simmons III. A break in the case came when a woman who had managed to escape an abduction attempt provided a detailed description of her attacker to the authorities. This description led them to Simmons, who was active in Jefferson County during the time of the murders. Upon his apprehension, Simmons confessed to the murders of Nancy Bettman, Robin L. Barnes, and Shannon House. He was subsequently charged with multiple counts of murder, rape, and kidnapping. In 1985, he was sentenced to death for his crimes, though this sentence was later commuted to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
