On a late Sunday evening in September of 1984, the life of Livingston County Deputy Sheriff Carnie F. Hopkins, a 54-year-old male, was tragically cut short. At approximately 11:20 p.m. on September 9th, Deputy Hopkins radioed his dispatch to inform them that he was stopping to investigate a hitchhiker near the intersection of US 60 and KY 137, just east of Smithland, Kentucky. This routine check would tragically be his last communication. A short time later, a dispatcher on their way to work discovered Deputy Hopkins's body at the scene.
The investigation that followed revealed that Deputy Hopkins had been involved in a struggle with his assailant or assailants. He died from a single gunshot wound to the chest, and it was determined that he had been shot with his own service weapon. The hitchhiker he had stopped to check on was gone, and no suspect was ever identified in the immediate aftermath of the murder. A United States Air Force veteran who had served in World War II, Hopkins had been with the Livingston County Sheriff's Department for two years.
Decades later, the murder of Deputy Carnie F. Hopkins remains an unsolved case, a lingering shadow over the community he served. Despite the passage of time, the Kentucky State Police have not closed the book on this investigation. In 2017, it was reported that detectives were actively investigating new leads that had been received. To this day, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly named in connection with his death. The case remains a poignant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made in the line of duty, leaving a family, including a wife, two sons, and a daughter, to mourn his loss.
