In the early hours of a Sunday morning in March 2015, a family altercation in London, Kentucky, turned fatal, claiming the life of 31-year-old Clifford Lee “CJ” Humfleet. The incident, which unfolded at a mobile home approximately two miles north of the city, involved Humfleet, his cousin, and his own brother.
An argument, believed to have been fueled by alcohol, escalated into a physical confrontation between CJ Humfleet and his 23-year-old cousin, Jonathan Ryan Humfleet. During the course of the dispute, a 9mm pistol was introduced into the conflict. It is alleged that CJ's 18-year-old brother, River Humfleet, supplied the firearm. In the ensuing violence, Jonathan Humfleet reportedly shot his cousin, Clifford Lee Humfleet, once in the chest.
Following the shooting, emergency services were dispatched to the residence. CJ Humfleet was critically injured and subsequently airlifted to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital for urgent medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Law enforcement officials quickly began an investigation into the homicide. Jonathan Ryan Humfleet was taken into custody and initially faced a charge of attempted murder, which was anticipated to be upgraded to murder following his cousin's death. In a tragic twist, CJ's brother, River Humfleet, was also arrested and charged with facilitation to commit murder for his alleged role in providing the weapon that ultimately took his brother's life. The authorities continued to investigate the specific details of what led to the deadly confrontation.
