In a tragic turn of events that stunned the community of Paintsville, Kentucky, 75-year-old James Wayne Nickell, a male resident, was found deceased in what authorities would come to describe as a horrific murder spree. The incident, which unfolded on a Saturday in February 2018, claimed the lives of four individuals before the perpetrator took his own life.
The grim discovery began when law enforcement responded to a 911 call regarding a shooting at a residence in the McKenzie Branch
area. Upon arrival, deputies found James Wayne Nickell and his wife, Arlene Nickell, dead in their kitchen from gunshot wounds. The investigation quickly identified their son, Joseph Nickell, as the shooter. A witness provided a description of the vehicle Joseph fled in, leading to a search.
The search for Joseph Nickell led authorities to an apartment complex in Paintsville. Inside one of the apartments, a further tragedy was discovered. Joseph Nickell had fatally shot his girlfriend, Lindsey Vanhoose, and her mother, Patricia Vanhoose. Joseph Nickell's body was also found at the scene, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in what was determined to be a murder-suicide.
Investigations into the motive for the killings pointed towards Joseph Nickell's long-standing struggles with drug addiction, which had reportedly worsened after the recent death of his sister. Friends and family recounted his battle with substance abuse, and court records indicated a history of related legal issues. The pastor of the church the Nickell family attended noted that Joseph had seemed 'out of it' on a substance shortly before the tragic events.
