On a tragic Friday afternoon, August 14, 2020, in the town of Earlington, Kentucky, the life of 30-year-old Nicole Merrell was cut short in a devastating act of violence. The female victim was in the parking lot of the Earlington Ideal Market when she was fatally shot. At the moment she was attacked, she was holding a toddler, who was also injured by gunfire but was expected to make a full recovery.
The investigation into Merrell's death quickly identified a suspect, 32-year-old Dennis
Stone of Madisonville. Authorities revealed that Stone and Merrell had children together. Following the shooting, Stone fled the scene, prompting a search. However, in the early hours of the following morning, he turned himself in to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department in Davidson County, Tennessee.
Detectives from the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office worked through the night to secure warrants for Stone's arrest. He was charged with murder, assault in the first degree, and twelve counts of wanton endangerment in the first degree, reflecting the danger his actions posed to others in the vicinity of the shooting. Following his surrender, the process to extradite Stone back to Kentucky was initiated. In September 2025, Dennis Stone pleaded guilty to the murder of Nicole Merrell and received a life sentence.
