In the winter of 2020, on December 21st, the life of 21-year-old Je’Kobi Marshaun Wells was tragically cut short in Paris, Kentucky. A former standout athlete at Paris High School, Wells was known for his charismatic spirit and was a celebrated member of the basketball team that achieved significant local success. His death sent shockwaves through the community that had watched him grow and excel.
The events leading to his death began to unfold as a purported marijuana deal. Wells entered a Ford Fusion on Stewart Street with three other individuals: 21-year-old Tyre Conner, 18-year-old Emilia Zahabi-Wisdom, and a third person who had reportedly arranged the transaction. An argument erupted over the payment for the marijuana. Conner alleged that Wells did not provide the full agreed-upon amount and refused to return the money that had been handed over.
According to statements made to the police, Conner claimed that Wells lunged at him, making him believe Wells was reaching for a handgun. In response, Conner fired a. 22 caliber handgun at Wells. When that weapon jammed, he grabbed a 9mm handgun and fired additional shots. After being shot, Wells managed to exit the vehicle at the intersection of Williams Street and Marshall Street, where he collapsed. Police were called to the scene around 5:37 p.m. about an injured person. Wells was transported to Bourbon Community Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Zahabi-Wisdom, who was driving the vehicle, fled the scene after Wells got out.
In the subsequent investigation, law enforcement identified and arrested three suspects. Tyre Conner was charged with murder, first-degree robbery, and engaging in organized crime. Emilia Zahabi-Wisdom faced charges of complicity to commit murder, first-degree robbery, engaging in organized crime, and tampering with physical evidence, as the car was reportedly cleaned after the incident. Later, a third individual, Isaiah Beasley, was also arrested and indicted on charges of complicity to commit murder, complicity to robbery, and tampering with evidence in connection to Wells' death.
