On a tragic day in Mankato, Minnesota, 32-year-old Svetlana Vladimirovna Munt, a White female, lost her life in a violent encounter on March 28, 2010. The events unfolded in the Rasmussen Woods Nature Area, where her life was cut short by her ex-husband, Joel Marvin Munt.
The incident began when Joel Munt intentionally rammed his SUV into Svetlana's car, pinning it against a cluster of trees.
With their three young children, aged 4, 5, and 7, witnessing the horror from within their mother's vehicle, Joel then opened fire. He shot Svetlana multiple times through the car window. An autopsy would later confirm she died from a gunshot wound to the head, having been shot a total of seven times.
Following the shooting, a couple who had witnessed the crash and saw smoke from the spinning tires of the SUV stopped to offer help. In a desperate attempt to flee, Joel Munt carjacked their SUV at gunpoint, forcing his three children into the stolen vehicle before driving away. His escape was short-lived, however. A Blue Earth County sheriff's deputy apprehended him on a dead-end gravel road shortly after the incident. Joel Munt surrendered without a struggle, and a gun was recovered from the vehicle. When law enforcement officials were comforting the children, one of them tragically stated, "Daddy killed mommy."
Joel Marvin Munt, then 33 and a resident of Burnsville, was arrested and subsequently charged with second-degree murder. This charge was later upgraded, and he was found guilty of first-degree murder, kidnapping, and 13 other felony counts. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release. Court records revealed a history of threats and abuse by Joel against Svetlana, including a previously issued order for protection. The couple had a contentious history involving court hearings regarding the custody and parenting time of their children.
