In a quiet shed in rural Pine Island, Minnesota, the lives of two young friends came to a tragic end on January 6, 2014. Nicholas Bryan Roecker, a 19-year-old Caucasian male, died from a gunshot wound in what authorities would later describe as a murder-suicide. A recent graduate of Lourdes High School, he was a freshman at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he was studying science and engineering.
Those who knew him described him as a hardworking and easy-going young man who had even started his own firewood business. He enjoyed outdoor activities like camping, canoeing, and fishing.
On that Monday, Roecker's high school friend and classmate, 18-year-old Kayla Jill Koranda, had gone to visit him at his family's home. Friends said they were part of the same social circle in high school but were not believed to be romantically involved. Investigators believe Koranda went to see Roecker out of concern, as he was reportedly battling depression. The two were communicating earlier in the day before she went to his residence.
Later that day, Roecker's father discovered both teenagers in a shed on the property with gunshot wounds and called 911. When first responders arrived, Koranda was already deceased, and Roecker was clinging to life. He was transported to Mayo Clinic Hospital-Rochester, where he later died. The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office investigated the deaths and concluded that Roecker shot Koranda before turning the gun on himself. A handgun was recovered at the scene. The authorities stated there was no ongoing risk to the public and that this was an isolated tragedy. No arrests were made as the investigation pointed to Roecker as the sole person responsible for the shootings.
