In the small community of New Ulm, Minnesota, the life of 22-year-old Liam Kelly, a White male, came to a tragic end on June 30, 2014. He was a graduate of New Ulm High School and was also a fourth-generation member of the New Ulm Battery.
The chain of events leading to his death began months earlier, on the night of February 15, 2014. Kelly was behind the wheel of a 2005 Mini Cooper, driving at a high rate of speed on U.S. Highway 14. The vehicle went out of control and rolled several times. The crash resulted in the death of his passenger, Randyn Groebner, and caused serious injuries to both Kelly and his brother, Ryan Kelly. Law enforcement officers at the scene detected the odor of alcohol, and a preliminary breath test indicated that Kelly had been drinking.
In the wake of the devastating crash, Liam Kelly faced serious legal consequences. He was charged with multiple felonies, including two counts of criminal vehicular homicide and two counts of criminal vehicular operation.
