On a tragic day in May of 2015, law enforcement was called to a residence in Onigum, Minnesota, nestled near the shores of Leech Lake, following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival at the home on Midway Drive NW on May 12th, they discovered a grim scene. Inside, 60-year-old David Smith of Walker was found deceased, having succumbed to a gunshot wound.
Another man, 57-year-old Leo Jordan, also of Walker, was found at the residence with a gunshot wound as well.
He was airlifted from the scene to a hospital in Fargo for medical treatment, but he later died from his injuries. The two men were identified as half-brothers.
The Cass County Sheriff's Office investigated the violent encounter and ultimately characterized the event as a murder-suicide. Authorities stated that the incident appeared to be contained to the two men at the residence and that there was no broader danger to the community. In the aftermath, the sheriff's office did not publicly specify which of the two men was the shooter in the incident that left both men dead. The investigation into what precipitated the fatal confrontation was said to be ongoing.
