Steven Martin Sandberg, a 60-year-old Caucasian male investigator, tragically lost his life on Sunday, October 18, 2015, while in the line of duty at St. Cloud Hospital in Minnesota. A 24-year veteran of the Aitkin County Sheriff's Office, Sandberg was assigned to guard a patient, 50-year-old Danny Leroy Hammond, who was a suspect in a domestic incident.
In the early morning hours, around 5:15 a.m., a violent altercation broke out between Hammond and the investigator in the hospital
room. Hammond, who was not restrained, managed to disarm Sandberg, seizing his service weapon and fatally shooting him.
Hospital security guards responded to the struggle and used a Taser to subdue Hammond. Shortly after being taken into custody, Hammond became unresponsive and, despite efforts to save him, was pronounced dead. The suspect in Investigator Sandberg's death died at the scene, and therefore no arrests were made in connection with the incident.
