On November 7, 2016, the life of Margaret "Maggie" Flath, a 27-year-old White/Caucasian female from Wadena, Minnesota, was tragically cut short. A caring mother of three and a dedicated home health aide, Maggie was known for her compassionate nature. Her death, which occurred in her own home, was not a random act of violence but the culmination of a domestic situation.
The day of the incident, Maggie's husband, Antonio St. Marie, had been released from jail on a domestic assault charge.
Despite a no-contact order, he went to the apartment he had shared with Maggie. There, he held her, their young child, and her brother, James Flath Jr., hostage at gunpoint. James was able to escape with the child and alert the authorities.
After a standoff, St. Marie fatally shot Maggie before attempting to flee the scene. His escape was brief, ending when he crashed his vehicle in what was described as a suicide attempt. Law enforcement discovered Maggie in the apartment, deceased from a gunshot wound.
Antonio St. Marie was subsequently arrested and faced multiple charges, including first-degree premeditated murder and kidnapping. In January 2017, a jury found him guilty on seven charges related to the murder of his wife. On March 22, 2017, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
