Barry Bennett, a former NFL player and his wife Carol, both aged 63, were found dead in their home in Long Prairie, Minnesota, on August 21, 2019. The discovery was made after a friend went to check on them when phone calls and texts went unanswered. The Todd County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and found the couple deceased with suspicious circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The primary suspect in the case was their 22-year-old son, Dylan Bennett.
Authorities issued a nationwide alert for Dylan, who was believed to have fled the state in a blue 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe. The FBI was involved in the investigation due to the possibility that Dylan had left Minnesota. Dylan Bennett was later apprehended in Cancun, Mexico, following an international manhunt. He was charged with two counts of premeditated first-degree murder for the shooting deaths of his parents.
Dylan initially pleaded not guilty but later changed his plea to guilty. On August 26, 2020, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The tragic incident shocked the Long Prairie community, where Barry and Carol were well-known and respected. Barry had a career in the NFL and was a retired high school teacher and football coach, while Carol worked as a tax preparer.
