On March 19, 2021, Regina Theresa Hughes, a 46-year-old White female, was tragically killed in her Rockford, Minnesota, home. The series of events that led to the discovery of her death began when neighbors reported a vehicle that had been left running in a driveway on Woodhill Court for over an hour. This prompted a response from the Wright County Sheriff's Office at approximately 8:27 p.m.
Upon their arrival, deputies approached the residence to check on the well-being of the
homeowners. Peering through a window, they made a grim discovery: a man, later identified as 47-year-old Christopher Michael Powers, was seen lying on the floor with an apparent gunshot wound to his head. This prompted the deputies to enter the home, where they found Hughes, who was also deceased inside the residence.
The investigation that followed determined that the incident was a murder-suicide. According to the Wright County Sheriff's Office, the evidence indicated that Powers, who was Hughes' boyfriend, had shot and killed her before turning the gun on himself. Both individuals resided at the Rockford home where their bodies were found. Authorities have not publicly specified a motive for the murder-suicide. In the wake of her death, Wright County facilities lowered their flags to half-staff to honor Hughes, who was a county employee.
