On the evening of May 6, 2021, a stop for gasoline turned into a fatal encounter for 19-year-old George Frances Zeon, a Black male from Plymouth, Minnesota. Zeon was with his girlfriend at an Amstar gas station on West Broadway in north Minneapolis at approximately 5:50 p.m., simply pumping gas into his vehicle. Suddenly, two young men approached him and his girlfriend. The men confronted Zeon, questioning him about a supposed gang affiliation.
Confused by the query, Zeon denied being in a gang. In the moments that followed, one of the individuals pulled out a handgun and opened fire.
Zeon was struck by multiple bullets, including a fatal shot to the head. The two assailants then fled the scene in a vehicle. Emergency services arrived to find Zeon gravely wounded, and he was rushed to North Memorial Medical Center. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries later that night. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that the cause of death was complications from the gunshot wound, ruling it a homicide.
The investigation into Zeon's death led authorities to a 17-year-old suspect, Albert J. Lucas IV, who was identified from surveillance footage at the gas station. The driver of the getaway vehicle, a female named Yalayna R. Butcher-Griffin, was located by police nearly two weeks later and she identified Lucas as the shooter from a photo lineup. Lucas was arrested on June 1, 2021, in Minnetonka. He was subsequently charged with second-degree intentional murder.
The legal proceedings that followed were complex. The case against Lucas was initially dismissed in April 2023 when Butcher-Griffin, a key witness, failed to appear in court to testify. However, the charges were refiled in January 2024 after she was taken back into custody. In November 2024, Yalayna R. Butcher-Griffin pleaded guilty to aiding an offender after the fact. She received a sentence of three years' probation, with the agreement that she would cooperate and testify truthfully against Lucas. Prosecutors have stated their intention to charge Lucas as an adult for his role in the killing of George Zeon.
