A dispute between two drivers that began near St. Cloud, Minnesota, escalated over a stretch of more than 40 miles, tragically ending in the death of 61-year-old William Floyd Haire on a Sunday afternoon. The white male from Buffalo, Minnesota, was involved in a prolonged altercation with another motorist on April 17, 2022. The conflict reached its fatal climax in the vicinity of County Road 30 and Garland Lane in Maple Grove, when a shot was fired from the other vehicle.
After the
shooting, both drivers left the immediate area. Responding officers later discovered Haire's vehicle off the roadway near Interstate 94 and Maple Grove Parkway. Inside, they found him suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was transported to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale. Despite medical efforts, William Floyd Haire succumbed to his injury and was pronounced dead at the hospital just before 5:00 p.m. that evening. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner officially ruled his death a homicide.
In the days following the incident, the Maple Grove Police Department announced that they were pursuing several leads and asked for the public's help with any information. Their investigation quickly pointed to a suspect. Shortly thereafter, an individual voluntarily surrendered to the Maple Grove Police Department in connection with the fatal road rage shooting. The suspect was taken into custody and transferred to the Hennepin County Jail as the investigation continued.
