Johntae Hudson, a 19-year-old from St. Paul, was tragically shot and killed inside the Nordstrom store at the Mall of America on December 23, 2022. The incident occurred around 7:49 p.m., and Hudson was pronounced dead at the scene. Surveillance footage captured the harrowing moments leading up to the shooting, showing Hudson being corralled by the suspects before being shot multiple times at point-blank range.
In the days following the shooting, Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges
announced the arrest of five individuals, including three juveniles, in connection with Hudson's death. A sixth suspect was later apprehended in Georgia and extradited to Minnesota. Among those charged were TaeShawn Adams-Wright and Lavon Longstreet, both 19 years old at the time of their arrests. Adams-Wright pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a 30-year prison sentence, with an expected 19½ years to be served due to time already spent in custody.
Lavon Longstreet, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, was charged with aiding and abetting intentional second-degree murder. Longstreet fled the state with his mother after the incident but was eventually captured in Georgia. Prosecutors successfully petitioned to have Longstreet tried as an adult. Two other juveniles involved in the case were charged with second-degree riot. Prosecutors sought to have their cases proceed under Extended Jurisdiction Juvenile status, which would allow for supervision until age 21, but at least one petition was denied by a judge.
The shooting not only claimed the life of a promising young man but also highlighted the need for stricter security measures and tougher penalties for violent crimes. Hudson's parents, Lynn and Johnny Hudson, have been vocal about their loss and the impact it has had on their community. They described Johntae as a dedicated volunteer and aspiring entrepreneur who had received college scholarship offers. The Hudson family continues to advocate for justice and reforms to prevent such tragedies in the future.
