In the early hours of a summer night in Wichita, Kansas, the life of 45-year-old Tuyet Huynh came to a violent and tragic end. On June 24, 2014, police responded to a distress call from her home shortly after midnight. What they discovered was a scene of unimaginable horror. Inside the house she shared with her family, Tuyet lay dead, the victim of multiple gunshot wounds. She was not the only one.
Her 20-year-old daughter, Trinh Pham, and her 21-year-old son-in-law, Sean Pham, had also been fatally shot. The sole survivor in the home was the Phams' infant son, a 5-month-old baby boy who was found unharmed.
The primary suspect, Tuyet's 41-year-old boyfriend, Vinh Van Nguyen, was found in the master bedroom near her body. He was taken into custody at the scene without any resistance, and a weapon was recovered. Investigators learned that while there were no prior reports of domestic violence at the residence, the relationship had been troubled. Tuyet had been trying to get Nguyen to move out of her home, and he had reportedly threatened her in the past.
In the wake of the triple homicide, Vinh Van Nguyen was charged with capital murder and held on a $2 million bond. The case, however, would wind slowly through the legal system, marked by years of delays. Questions surrounding Nguyen's mental competency to stand trial were raised by his defense team, prolonging the wait for justice for the families of Tuyet Huynh, Trinh Pham, and Sean Pham.
