In the late hours of Sunday, March 13, 2022, a tragic event unfolded in the 200 block of North Walnut Street in Coffeyville, Kansas. A shooting occurred just before midnight, resulting in a 15-year-old White/Caucasian female, Nasha Gregory, suffering a fatal gunshot wound. A sophomore at Chanute High School, Nasha was rushed to Coffeyville Regional Medical Center for her injuries, but she ultimately succumbed to them. Originally from Chanute and a former resident of Moran with family in Allen County, her sudden death sent ripples through the community.
The subsequent investigation by the Coffeyville Police Department quickly led to persons of interest. Two days after the shooting, on March 15, authorities arrested 19-year-old Treyvin Hayes-Smith of Coffeyville. He faced several serious charges, including involuntary manslaughter, aggravated endangering a child, contributing to the misconduct of a child, and interference with law enforcement. The investigation did not stop with his arrest, as it was believed others were present at the time of the fatal incident.
Shortly after Hayes-Smith was taken into custody, a second suspect was arrested in connection with Nasha's death. Makinzy Mary Alice Steeves, a 20-year-old from Topeka, was apprehended in Coffeyville. She was charged with aggravated endangerment of a child, contributing to a child's misconduct by providing alcohol to a minor, and interference with law enforcement for allegedly reporting a crime falsely. Both suspects were scheduled for appearances in Montgomery County District Court to face the charges related to the night that ended a young life far too soon.
