On a tragic Friday in Pittsburg, Kansas, the life of Stephanie Marie Short, a 40-year-old mother and grandmother, was cut short. On May 13, 2022, she passed away in her home from what would be determined to be a homicide. Her death was the result of a shooting incident that also left another woman, Velma Marie Cubie, injured. The event prompted an intensive investigation involving the Pittsburg Police Department, the Crawford County Sheriff's Office, and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
As investigators delved into the case, they followed up on numerous leads and conducted a series of interviews. This led to the execution of several search warrants at various residences throughout Pittsburg. In the course of these searches, authorities made a number of arrests for offenses unrelated to the homicide, though the individuals were questioned about the shooting. The investigation revealed that the fatal incident involved an exchange of gunfire between multiple individuals.
The investigation led to the identification of two primary suspects. One of those suspects was identified as 19-year-old Dominik Samuel Short, the victim's own son. An arrest warrant for him was issued on May 18, 2022, and he was apprehended in Springfield, Missouri, on May 26 by U.S. Marshals and the Greene County Sheriff's Office. He faced charges of first-degree murder, criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied building, aggravated battery, and aggravated assault. Another man, James Hamilton, was also arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Stephanie's death.
