In a quiet, rural home in Mound Valley, Kansas, a grim discovery was made on October 3, 2022. Leanda Pound, a 43-year-old Caucasian female, was found deceased alongside her companion, 39-year-old Jason M. Bakken. A friend who had gone to check on the couple at their residence at 693 16000 Rd. stumbled upon the tragic scene and immediately alerted the Labette County Sheriff's Office.
Upon their arrival, deputies were met with a scene that suggested the pair had been deceased for some
time. Investigators now believe that the murders may have occurred up to a month before their bodies were discovered. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist with the case, and the circumstances surrounding the deaths were deemed suspicious from the outset. Autopsies later confirmed that both Pound and Bakken had died from gunshot wounds, officially ruling their deaths as homicides.
The investigation into the double homicide is ongoing, and as of now, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case remains a somber mystery in the small Kansas community. In an effort to generate new leads, Governor Laura Kelly has issued an executive order for a $5,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the deaths of Leanda Pound and Jason Bakken. Law enforcement officials urge anyone with information, regardless of how insignificant it may seem, to come forward and contact the KBI or the Labette County Sheriff's Office.
