On a late summer evening in Washington, D.C., tragedy struck in the River Terrace neighborhood of Northeast. It was around 11:30 PM on Saturday, August 27, 2016, when gunfire erupted in the 300 block of 34th Street NE. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered two men suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. One of the victims was 40-year-old Raeshard Blue, a Black male from Northeast Washington.
The other man was identified as 27-year-old Trayvon Johnson, also a resident of Northeast D.C.
Emergency medical personnel treated both men at the scene. Johnson was pronounced dead where he was found. Blue, however, was transported to a local hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The double homicide left the community shaken and searching for answers.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation into the deaths of Raeshard Blue and Trayvon Johnson. Despite their efforts, authorities did not immediately apprehend any suspects. Investigators worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting and to identify the person or persons responsible.
