In a tragic sequence of events that began on the evening of June 19, 2018, Andre Simmons, Jr., a 28-year-old male from Bowie, Maryland, was targeted in a violent kidnapping. While riding a scooter near his mother's home, he was deliberately struck by a car. Two armed men then emerged, pistol-whipped him, and bound his hands with zip ties before forcing him into their vehicle.
This abduction was the beginning of a harrowing ordeal for Simmons and his family.
Following the kidnapping, the captors initiated contact with Simmons' family, demanding a ransom for his safe return. Desperate to secure his release, his family complied with the kidnappers' instructions. They arranged for a payment of $7,000, which was dropped off at a specified location in the early morning hours of June 20, 2018. The family's hopes for his safety were tragically shattered shortly after the ransom was collected.
Approximately an hour after the ransom money was picked up, the situation took a fatal turn. In an alley in the 600 block of Atlantic Street, SE, in Washington, D.C., Simmons was shot 19 times. His body was discovered by police, with his hands still bound by zip ties. The investigation into the kidnapping and murder swiftly led to the identification of suspects.
The investigation ultimately led to the arrests of four men: Darin Moore Jr., Gabriel Brown, John Sweeney, and James Taylor. It was revealed that the group had planned to target Simmons and his associates for robberies. Following their arrests and a trial, all four men were found guilty. They were subsequently sentenced to life in prison for their roles in the kidnapping and murder of Andre Simmons, Jr. After the murder, the four men met in Capitol Heights, Maryland, to divide the ransom money.
