In the spring of 2020, a violent encounter in a Northeast Washington, D.C. apartment building brought an end to the life of 22-year-old D’Andre Mickle. On the morning of April 28th, events unfolded inside the Parkway Plaza Apartments on 24th Street NE that would leave Mickle with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Initially, the circumstances surrounding the shooting were unclear.
Investigators with the Metropolitan Police Department began to piece together the moments leading up to the fatal shooting. It was determined that Mickle had forcibly entered one of the apartments in the building. Inside, he was confronted by an armed individual, and an altercation ensued which resulted in Mickle being shot. The shooter was questioned by detectives but was not immediately charged.
Further investigation by the police department shed more light on the incident, leading them to classify the shooting of D'Andre Mickle as a justifiable homicide. No arrests were made in his death. In a turn of events, detectives publicly identified Mickle as the primary suspect in a homicide that had occurred two months earlier. Police stated that Mickle was responsible for the shooting death of 21-year-old De'mari Twyman on Monroe Street NE on February 28, 2020. This revelation provided a new context to the events of that April morning, suggesting a history of violence that culminated in his own death.
