In the late hours of a spring evening in Washington, D.C., a burst of violence cut short the life of 17-year-old Dawaun Simmons. On May 7, 2020, at approximately 11:30 p.m., officers from the Sixth District of the Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the 4400 block of Quarles Street, Northeast, following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered the young Black male suffering from a gunshot wound.
