In the late hours of a spring evening in Washington, D.C., a burst of violence cut short the life of 17-year-old Dawaun Simmons. On May 7, 2020, at approximately 11:30 p.m., officers from the Sixth District of the Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the 4400 block of Quarles Street, Northeast, following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered the young Black male suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services rushed Dawaun to a local hospital,
where he fought for his life for four days. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on May 11, 2020. The case was immediately classified as a homicide, and an investigation was launched by the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch.
In the wake of his death, authorities have sought assistance from the public to bring those responsible to justice. The Metropolitan Police Department has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a suspect or suspects. However, to date, no arrests have been made in connection with the fatal shooting. The investigation remains open as detectives continue to search for answers and a motive behind the teenager's death. No specific suspects have been publicly identified.
