On a spring morning in Washington, D.C., the life of 28-year-old Eddie Crist was cut short by gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services rushed Crist to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
At the time of his death, authorities listed Crist as having no fixed address.
The investigation into the homicide led detectives to identify a suspect. On Monday, September 21, 2020, members of the Metropolitan Police Department arrested 35-year-old Nathaniel Bates of Southeast, D.C., charging him with first-degree murder while armed. Court documents revealed that Bates was wearing a GPS monitoring device as a condition of his pretrial release in another case. Data from this device placed him at the scene of the shooting at the time it occurred, a fact that prosecutors highlighted as crucial evidence.
During legal proceedings, it was noted that Bates's arrival at the scene was within a minute of the shots being fired. His defense attorney argued that his presence alone was not enough to prove his guilt and that there was no other evidence tying him to the crime. The prosecution, however, pointed to contradictory statements Bates made to detectives and the 'extraordinary' timing of his presence at the location of the murder. A judge found that there was probable cause to move the case toward trial, and Bates remained detained.
