In the late afternoon of a summer day in Washington, D.C., tragedy struck in a neighborhood near Union Station. On Saturday, August 15, 2020, 31-year-old Arvel Wills of Northeast Washington was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 5:35 p.m. in the 500 block of I Street NE, an area just north of the bustling H Street corridor.
Responding to reports of gunshots, officers from the First and Fifth Districts arrived at the scene to find a grim reality.
Arvel Wills was discovered unconscious and unresponsive, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the prompt arrival of DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, there were no signs of life. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch are actively investigating the fatal shooting. At the time of the initial reports, the motive for the attack remained unknown, and no arrests had been made in connection with the case. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek information from the public to bring those responsible to justice.
