In the autumn of 2018, a young man's life was tragically cut short in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Southeast Washington, D.C. On the morning of October 11, police responded to a report of a shooting and discovered 27-year-old Roderick Thomas inside a vehicle, unconscious and suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
Thomas, a resident of Southeast D.C., was known by the nickname '4 Double R' and worked as a barber. He was remembered as a funny, kind, and hardworking individual who was always smiling.
The investigation into the death of Roderick Thomas led authorities to a suspect, 18-year-old DeAndre Houston. According to court documents, the tragic encounter was the result of a robbery that had been orchestrated through an online marketplace. Houston had created a fake advertisement for a laptop, luring Thomas to the 3200 block of 12th Street, SE, with the intention of robbing him. Witnesses reported seeing a male individual arguing with Thomas near a black Audi while holding a gun, and then heard three gunshots.
A crucial piece of evidence in the case was a black backpack left at the scene, which contained a book from a nearby elementary school that was traced back to Houston. Fingerprints lifted from the book also matched the suspect. While Houston's attorney initially argued that the evidence was circumstantial, a judge found probable cause to charge him with first-degree murder while armed. Ultimately, DeAndre Houston pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree murder while armed. In December 2022, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in the robbery that led to the fatal shooting of Roderick Thomas. It was revealed during the legal proceedings that while Houston and an accomplice robbed Thomas of $225 and attempted to take his car, it was the accomplice who fired the fatal shot when Thomas resisted.
