In a tragic and unforeseen turn of events, Harold James, a 66-year-old Black male, lost his life on the evening of February 9, 2022, in his Southeast Washington, D.C. apartment. The quiet of the evening was shattered when a single gunshot, originating from the apartment directly above his, found its way into his home, forever altering the lives of those involved.
At approximately 9:00 p.m. that Wednesday, Mr. James was resting in his bed in the 2300 block of Good Hope Road SE.
Unbeknownst to him, his neighbor upstairs was in the process of cleaning a legally registered firearm. In a devastating accident, the weapon discharged. The bullet pierced through the floor of the neighbor's apartment and the ceiling of Mr. James's, striking him in the left leg.
First responders were dispatched to the scene following a report of an unconscious person. Upon their arrival, officers from the Metropolitan Police Department discovered Mr. James suffering from a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a local hospital by D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services. Despite their efforts, Harold James was pronounced dead shortly after 10:00 p.m.
The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the incident, which they have classified as a case of involuntary manslaughter. The neighbor, whose identity has not been publicly released, has been fully cooperative with the authorities throughout the investigation. As the firearm was legally owned, and the incident appears to be a tragic accident, no arrests have been made, and no suspect has been named as the investigation continues.
