On a sunny Sunday morning in Las Vegas, June 8, 2014, the life of 31-year-old Igor Soldo, a male of Bosnian descent, was cut tragically short in a sudden and violent ambush. Soldo, a dedicated police officer with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, was enjoying a lunch break with his partner, Officer Alyn Beck, at a CiCi's Pizza on Nellis Boulevard.
The two officers were completely unaware that they were being targeted by a married couple, Jerad and Amanda Miller, who were about to unleash a deadly attack.
The Millers, driven by extreme anti-government and anti-police ideologies, had entered the pizzeria with the intent to kill law enforcement officers. Jerad Miller approached the unsuspecting officers and, without warning, fatally shot Officer Soldo in the head. As Officer Beck reacted, both Jerad and Amanda Miller opened fire, killing him as well. After the shooting, the couple draped a Gadsden flag over one of the officers and left a swastika and a note that declared, "This is the beginning of a revolution." They then took the officers' weapons and ammunition before fleeing the scene.
Their violent spree continued as they moved to a nearby Walmart. Inside the store, Jerad Miller fired a warning shot and ordered shoppers to leave. An armed civilian, Joseph Wilcox, bravely attempted to confront Jerad but was shot and killed by Amanda Miller. The arrival of responding police officers led to a shootout inside the Walmart. The confrontation ended when police shot and killed Jerad Miller. His wife, Amanda, after being wounded, took her own life.
The investigation into the tragic events of that day revealed the Millers' deep-seated hatred for law enforcement. They were prepared for a prolonged confrontation, carrying multiple firearms, ammunition, and other supplies. Their actions were a premeditated act of violence intended to spark a revolution against the government. No arrests were made as both suspects died at the scene of their final crime. The community was left to mourn the loss of two dedicated police officers and a courageous civilian who lost their lives in a senseless act of violence.
