On September 22, 2015, a tragic and violent incident unfolded in Sparks, Nevada, involving Debra “Debby” Angelo Constantino and her estranged husband, Mark Constantino. The events began early in the morning when a woman returned to her residence at 2305 Escalera Court in Reno and discovered the body of her male roommate, 55-year-old James Anderson, who had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
During the investigation, police determined that Debby Constantino, who was also a roommate
at the residence, was missing. This led authorities to investigate the history of Debby and Mark Constantino, revealing a long and tumultuous history of domestic violence. The couple, both 52 years old, had been involved in several incidents of domestic violence, including a recent case of kidnapping and domestic battery/strangulation on August 7, 2015.
Police used cell phone location data to track Debby and Mark Constantino's phones, which led them to an apartment at 1100 15th Street in Sparks, near the residence of Mark Constantino's daughter. Upon approaching the apartment, officers heard gunfire and a male voice, identified as Mark Constantino, warning them to retreat and stating that it was a hostage situation. Mark Constantino demanded 15 minutes to collect his thoughts, threatening to shoot Debby if the police did not comply.
The situation escalated into a standoff, with police and SWAT teams from both the Reno Police Department and the Sparks Police Department surrounding the apartment. Negotiators attempted to establish communication with Mark Constantino to resolve the situation peacefully. However, despite these efforts, negotiations continued until approximately 1:15 p.m., when a single gunshot was heard from inside the apartment. SWAT officers then made an emergency entry into the apartment using explosives to breach the door.
Inside the apartment, police found both Debby and Mark Constantino dead from fatal gunshot wounds. Autopsies performed the following day confirmed that neither Debby nor Mark had been shot by law enforcement personnel. The investigation concluded that the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide, with Mark Constantino being the perpetrator.
The couple's history of domestic violence was well-documented, with Mark Constantino having previously called police on multiple occasions, reporting threats from Debby. However, Debby had also taken out a protective order against Mark and filed for divorce, citing incidents of physical abuse, including being beaten and choked unconscious by Mark and his 23-year-old daughter.
