In the quiet town of Gardnerville, Nevada, a domestic dispute on October 13, 2015, escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 50-year-old Michelle Kozlowski. The incident, which unfolded on Manhattan Way, involved her 27-year-old son, Jarek Kozlowski.
The conflict began inside their home, where Jarek produced a handgun and threatened his mother. His younger brother, Joseph, attempted to de-escalate the situation by convincing Jarek to go outside.
Once outside, a physical altercation broke out between the two brothers, during which Jarek regained control of the weapon. He then aimed the gun at Joseph, who fled the scene. It was at this moment that Michelle confronted her son, and he fatally shot her in the street.
When deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office arrived at the residence around 1:24 a.m. following reports of a domestic dispute and shots fired, they discovered Michelle's body. As they approached the house, Jarek opened fire on the officers from the doorway. The deputies returned fire, striking Jarek. Despite his injuries, he managed to flee over a back fence, leading to a foot pursuit through the neighborhood. He was eventually located and taken into custody with serious injuries.
Jarek Kozlowski was transported to a hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds. However, a few days later, on October 17, 2015, he died. Authorities reported that his death was due to respiratory failure and not directly a result of the injuries he sustained during the shootout with law enforcement. No deputies were injured in the exchange of gunfire. The Carson City Sheriff's Office was involved in the investigation, a standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
