On June 7, 2018, Patricia Jones, a Black/African American female, was found deceased in her apartment in Las Vegas, Nevada. A maintenance worker at her apartment complex on the 5500 block of Lake Mead Boulevard discovered her body and immediately alerted the police. Jones had been shot in the head. The investigation into her death quickly uncovered details about her personal life that would lead to a suspect.
Friends and acquaintances of Jones told detectives that she had recently been
involved in an extramarital affair with a married man known as "D," whom they described as an "ex-cop." Hours before she was killed, Jones had texted a friend, the same maintenance worker who would later find her, to say that her boyfriend was on his way to her apartment. Investigators learned that the man, whose real name was Demetrick Roberson, was a 42-year-old armed security guard and a former military police officer. Jones had reportedly angered Roberson about a week before her death by posting a photo of them kissing on Facebook.
Detectives were able to piece together a timeline that placed Roberson at Jones's apartment at the time of the shooting. Cell phone records indicated his presence near her home, and a witness reported hearing an argument followed by a gunshot. Furthermore, both Jones's and Roberson's phones were turned off around the same time. When his phone was turned back on hours later, it was tracked to his residence in North Las Vegas. Roberson's supervisor at the security company also confirmed his relationship with Jones, stating that Roberson had been caught bringing her into a secure area at his workplace.
On June 20, 2018, Demetrick Roberson was arrested and charged with murder with a deadly weapon. During his interrogation, he admitted to being at Jones's home at the time of the shooting and to having an affair with her, but he denied killing her. Police noted that Roberson showed no emotion when discussing Jones's murder. He also refused to take a polygraph test, claiming he was too nervous and would fail. Roberson was subsequently booked into the Clark County Detention Center.
