In the late hours of November 10, 2018, a birthday party in a south Las Vegas Valley apartment took a tragic turn, ending the life of 23-year-old Ryan Nelson of Henderson. The gathering, held at the Amalfi Apartments on Wigwam Avenue, was small, with about eight people in their 20s in attendance. Inside one of the apartment's bedrooms, a single gunshot shattered the celebratory atmosphere, leaving a devastating impact.
That single bullet ended Ryan Nelson's life at the scene and then
struck another man in his mid-20s in the head, leaving him with life-threatening injuries. When police arrived around 9:30 p.m., they found a chaotic scene. Investigators recovered the firearm and were told by witnesses that Nelson had been seen holding a gun just before the shot was heard. While alcohol was present at the party, it was not immediately clear if intoxication was a factor. Initially, the police treated the incident as a possible accidental shooting and stated that there was no suspect.
Several months later, in April 2019, the Clark County coroner's office officially ruled Ryan Nelson's death a suicide, caused by a gunshot wound to the head. Despite this ruling, law enforcement officials admitted that it remained uncertain whether the trigger was pulled intentionally. The investigation was complicated by the fact that the second man who was shot was still rehabilitating from his severe injury and had not been interviewed by police nearly five months after the incident. Nelson, who had been working as an EMT for Community Ambulance for just over a year, was remembered by his mother as an adventurous, outdoorsy person who enjoyed snowboarding and off-roading. He had even considered a future career in law enforcement.
