On a tragic Saturday in Las Vegas, a family gathering turned into a scene of violence that claimed the life of 72-year-old Hispanic male, Manuel Fernandez. On April 4, 2020, what was reportedly a family cookout at their home on Garland Court ended with Manuel Fernandez shot and killed, and his wife, Nemesia, critically wounded.
The couple's son, 30-year-old Alfonso Fernandez, was identified as the suspect and was taken into custody at the scene.
According to police reports, Alfonso had been using methamphetamine the night before the incident. This substance use is believed to have contributed to a state of paranoia, as he claimed to hear noises and footsteps throughout the residence. His growing agitation throughout the day stemmed from his family not believing his claims.
This frustration culminated in a violent outburst. After telling his two sisters to leave the house, an argument ensued. Alfonso then allegedly lured his father into the garage under the pretense of wanting to talk to him. It was there that he reportedly shot his father multiple times. Following this, he went back inside the house and shot his mother. After the shootings, Alfonso went upstairs to apologize to his sisters before surrendering to the authorities.
Alfonso Fernandez was arrested and faced charges of murder and attempted murder. He was subsequently booked into the Clark County Detention Center. Reports from law enforcement indicated that he confessed to the shootings, stating his anger at his parents because it was their house and they made the rules, and his frustration that they dismissed his concerns about the noises he was hearing.
