In the spring of 1983, a sense of unease settled over the community of Montrose, Colorado, following a sudden act of violence that claimed the life of one of its own. Larry F. McMaster, a 37-year-old male officer with the Montrose Police Department, succumbed to a fatal gunshot wound, leaving behind a legacy of service and a community in mourning. The events that led to his untimely death unfolded on a Saturday evening, April 23, 1983, when he and fellow officers were dispatched to a local bar to investigate a reported disturbance.
Upon their arrival, the scene was deceptively calm. As Officer McMaster and two other officers entered the establishment from the rear, two additional officers approached the front. Inside, there was no sign of the reported trouble. The quiet atmosphere was shattered in an instant when a man seated at the bar abruptly turned and opened fire. In the ensuing chaos, another officer was wounded, and Officer McMaster was struck in the head by a bullet.
For two days, Officer McMaster fought for his life. However, his injuries proved too severe, and he passed away, leaving a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, and colleagues.
