On a warm Independence Day in 2000, Benjamin Avila, a 69-year-old man, was tending to his work as a street vendor in Denver, Colorado. Known for his daily routine of selling beans and other goods from his pickup truck, he was a familiar and beloved figure in the west Denver area. That afternoon, around 3 p.m., in the parking lot of a lounge on West Alameda Avenue, an argument erupted between Avila and an unknown man. The dispute escalated tragically, and the unidentified individual shot Avila.
