In the quiet town of Hudson, Colorado, a grim discovery shattered the winter peace on January 15, 2009. Velva Sue Enander, a 61-year-old female, was found brutally murdered in her home alongside her husband, Harold 'Hap' Enander, 69. A friend, concerned after not hearing from the couple, entered their residence to find a scene of disarray and violence. Velva Sue was discovered on the floor of their bedroom, having been shot multiple times and severely beaten.
Her husband was also found deceased, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound.
The initial investigation led authorities to consider the possibility of a home invasion gone wrong, given that the house appeared to have been ransacked. However, this theory soon gave way to a more sinister and personal motive. Suspicion eventually fell upon Hap's daughter and Velva Sue's stepdaughter, Kara Lounsbury. Investigators uncovered a history of animosity from Lounsbury towards her father and stepmother, fueled by a desire for financial gain from their life insurance policy.
Evidence gathered by the Adams County Sheriff's office began to paint a damning picture of Lounsbury's involvement. Surveillance footage from a neighboring property, belonging to her brother, captured a vehicle matching Lounsbury's visiting the Enander's home on the night of the murders. Furthermore, a latex glove found at the crime scene contained both Velva Sue's and another woman's DNA. Although Lounsbury attempted to deflect blame onto her brother, the evidence against her mounted.
Kara Lounsbury was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. During her trial, prosecutors argued that she executed the killings in a fit of rage, shooting her sleeping father and then turning her violence on her stepmother with exceptional brutality. The defense contended that Lounsbury's brother was the actual perpetrator. However, the jury was convinced of her guilt. In February 2010, Kara Lounsbury was convicted of the murders of her father and stepmother and was subsequently sentenced to two concurrent life sentences without the possibility of parole.
