In the early morning hours of July 16, 2016, the life of 26-year-old Paul Anthony Ortiz, Jr., a Hispanic male from Greeley, Colorado, was tragically cut short. Ortiz was found in the front yard of a residence on C Street with multiple gunshot wounds. Rushed to the North Colorado Medical Center, he succumbed to his injuries, leaving a community in shock and a family to grapple with a sudden and violent loss.
The initial stages of the investigation into the fatal shooting pointed authorities toward a suspect named Refugio Ramos, who was publicly identified and sought for first-degree murder. It was believed that Ortiz had gone to the house and knocked on the door, only to be met with a barrage of bullets from the man who answered. As Greeley Police detectives worked to piece together the events of that morning, Ramos remained at large, having reportedly fled the area after the crime.
However, the investigation took a significant turn, leading to another individual: 21-year-old Marcello Rodriquez, also of Greeley. It was at Rodriquez's home that the shooting occurred. In a surprising development, Rodriquez turned himself in to the police in July. He initially pleaded guilty to the murder, seemingly bringing a swift, though somber, resolution to the case. This guilty plea was later withdrawn.
During his trial in December 2018, Rodriquez changed his story, attempting to place the blame on his cousin and fellow gang member, Refugio Ramos. Rodriquez testified that Ramos had ordered him to take responsibility for the murder, promising a lenient sentence of only 10 years. Faced with the reality of a mandatory life sentence, Rodriquez recanted his confession. Despite his testimony, a jury found Marcello Rodriquez guilty of first-degree murder. In January 2019, a Weld District Court judge sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a final and definitive conclusion to the search for justice for Paul Ortiz.
