In a Boulder, Colorado park on December 5, 2016, the life of Rashaan Salaam, a 42-year-old male, came to a tragic end. His body was discovered in Eben G. Fine Park, a place not far from where he had achieved legendary status on the football field for the University of Colorado. Weeks later, the Boulder County coroner's office confirmed these suspicions,
officially ruling his death a suicide caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The autopsy report shed more light on his state of mind, revealing a history of depression and recent life stressors, according to his family. Toxicology results showed that his blood-alcohol content was more than three times the legal driving limit, and he also had THC in his system.
Salaam's family, citing their Muslim faith, declined to allow neuropathological tests on his brain that could have determined if he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy a degenerative brain disease linked to head trauma from his football career. His professional journey after a celebrated college career, which included winning the Heisman Trophy in 1994, had been fraught with challenges, including injuries and a shortened NFL career.
