In the summer of 2017, a young man's journey to Denver for what he thought was a straightforward business transaction ended in a fatal encounter on a city street. Joshua Hughes, a 26-year-old male from Montana, had traveled to Denver with the intention of purchasing two pounds of marijuana for $3,000. The deal, however, was a setup for a robbery that would ultimately cost him his life.
On the evening of August 20, 2017, police responded to a 911 call in the 5000 block of Titan Court.
There, they found Joshua Hughes lying in the street, suffering from four gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Denver Health Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. What began as a plan to buy marijuana had turned into a brutal homicide, leaving a young man dead and a complex investigation in its wake.
Denver Police detectives delved into the digital footprint of the planned drug deal, which had been arranged through a website called the Commerce City Kush Club. Their investigation of social media sites, including Facebook, led them to identify four individuals involved in the deadly ambush. The suspects were Quincy Wilkerson, Armani Pierre, Isaiah Davis, and Kylvito Garrette. Each played a role in the robbery and murder of Hughes, and all were subsequently arrested and charged.
In August 2019, the four men faced justice for their crimes. Quincy Wilkerson, who was a minor at the time of the murder, was convicted of second-degree murder and received a 28-year prison sentence. Armani Pierre was sentenced to 42 years for aggravated robbery and being an accessory to murder. Isaiah Davis and Kylvito Garrette were both found guilty of second-degree murder and each received a 44-year prison sentence. The convictions and lengthy sentences brought a close to the case, holding the four individuals accountable for the violent death of Joshua Hughes.
