On the evening of May 3, 2020, a neighborhood gathering in the 900 block of Clay Street in Denver, Colorado, turned tragic, ending in the death of 41-year-old Billy Williams. The altercation began when Williams's neighbor, George Magee, reportedly started an argument with Williams's sister while family members were enjoying a game of football outside.

The verbal dispute quickly escalated. Another person joined the argument, and witnesses stated they saw Magee physically assault that individual. In response to the escalating situation, Billy Williams came out of his residence and punched Magee. Immediately following this, gunfire erupted. Williams was shot at least twice, and a 35-year-old woman was also injured in the shooting. First responders arrived at the scene shortly before 8 p.m. and transported both victims to a nearby hospital, where Williams died from his wounds several hours later.

Following the shooting, the suspect, George Magee, fled the scene. He was later discovered by law enforcement hiding under a ramp at a warehouse in a nearby industrial area and was taken into custody just before midnight. The Denver District Attorney's Office charged Magee with a number of serious offenses, including two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, four counts of possession of a weapon by a previous offender, and two counts of first-degree assault.

The legal proceedings against George Magee culminated in a trial where a Denver jury deliberated his fate. In July of 2022, the jury returned with a partial verdict. While they reached a consensus on some of the charges, they were unable to come to a unanimous decision on the most severe charge of first-degree murder, resulting in a hung jury for that specific count.
