In the spring of 2021, a young man's life was tragically cut short in a quiet community. Joseph Edward Barela Jr., a 22-year-old Hispanic male from Rocky Ford, Colorado, was found with a gunshot wound to his head on May 17, 2021. The incident occurred in the 29000 block of Otero County Road 20, just outside the city limits. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and Barela was quickly transported to the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center for immediate medical attention.
Due to the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently transferred to UC Health Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Joseph Barela succumbed to his injuries and passed away the following day, on May 18, 2021. His death sent ripples of shock and grief through his family and the close-knit community of Rocky Ford, where he was known and loved.
The Otero County Sheriff's Office immediately launched an investigation into the shooting, treating it as a possible homicide.
